Add to this the extremely high divorce rate, the fact that mothers are dressing younger, and it all could end up causing problems with the little girl’s perception of how a mother should be and act.

Sometimes this mother daughter rivalry is actually brought on by an unknowing father. Perhaps the father and the mother’s relationship is not what it uses to be in previous years. The mother little girl may be fighting for the same love of the same man her father and may create competition because one is getting more love than the other, or the father has a closer relationship with his little girl than his wife which creates resentment.

All the while the mother sees the father treating the daughter like his 'precious little girl' and the mother gets jealous. As this goes on the mother starts to get even more jealous and the tension starts to build. The mother may unknowingly begin to push the daughter away and put space between them.

Another aspect of this mother daughter rivalry could be that the mother wants the youth and the freedom that the daughter has. The mother may have gotten married to early and at a young age. She has been a house wife with kids her whole life while the daughter is out pursuing a career, making more money, and living a life the mother always wished she could have lived but never got the chance to. The mother may have the money and has kept in shape. A divorced mother could easily be seeking younger men, and they could easily cross some age dynamics if they are both actively dating. The mother is pursuing younger men while it is very common for younger women to seek older men. Resentment may grow. The daughter could blame the mother for her parents divorce also.

There are many reasons this mother daughter rivalry could exist and none of them healthy. The good news is that it is never too late to start repairing and working towards a new beginning. Communication is obviously very important in any relationship rivalry and it starts there.
